The basics

Never hand over your bank card or account information
Be wary of unexpected or suspicious telephone calls, emails or SMS requesting personal account or card information.
Remember, the Bank or Police will NEVER ask you to disclose your PIN details. We will also NEVER arrange to collect your card and PIN via a courier, as a result of a fraud investigation.

Keep your cards and card details in a safe place
Always keep your bank and credit card statements in a safe place and shred any paperwork relating to your cards when it's no longer required.
Never record you PIN or password in a way that might be recognised by someone else and do not disclose your PIN or password to anyone

Protect your Card and PIN
Always keep your card in sight, particularly when making purchases in crowded areas.
Remain vigilant and do not allow yourself to get distracted when using your card and PIN at an ATM or when making a purchase in a shop. Remember, “Always Shield your PIN” and take your card promptly.

Reconcile your statements
Regularly check your paper statements or use our Online/Mobile banking services to monitor your account activity. If you notice an unknown or suspicious transaction, please contact us immediately.

Report lost and stolen cards immediately

If your card is Lost or Stolen, including where it is captured at an ATM, please report this to us immediately, to prevent any fraudulent card use.

Protect yourself when shopping online
We have enhanced our NatWest Secure service. When shopping online you will no longer need to enter a password, most transactions will simply go straight through after being checked by the bank.  For some transactions you may be asked to enter a one time passcode online which we will send to you.  You can select whether you wish this passcode to be sent to your mobile, email address or via a voicemail to your landline. NatWest Secure provides you with additional protection when shopping online at participating merchants.

To ensure you can complete online purchases quickly it is essential that you keep your contact details up to date, so if verification is requested we can send you a one time passcode.Ensure that you only enter your card details on secure websites
Secure websites are identified by a padlock or key symbol and a site address that changes from 'http' to 'https'.

Print out your order
When shopping online, make sure you get a hard copy of both your order form and the retailer's terms and conditions. When buying from overseas suppliers, remember that it may be difficult to resolve any issues that crop up. Therefore, having all the relevant information to hand will assist you and your bank, should you need to dispute a transaction.
 

Chip & PIN

Chip and PIN is a very simple way to keep your money safe. The system makes it much more difficult for criminals to gain access to your account.

In the past, you would sign a paper receipt to verify your card payments. Now you simply enter a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN), just like you do at a cash machine.

Stay safe
Criminals are particularly keen on getting the PINs connected with your debit and credit cards. Whether banking online or entering your PIN details in a public place, you should always be vigilant.

Chip and PIN tips

• Always keep your card out of sight and in a safe place, and never let anyone else use it.
• Never tell anyone your PIN, not even your family, the bank or the police.

• When you receive a new PIN, memorise it straightaway and immediately destroy the slip.
• Remain vigilant and do not allow yourself to get distracted when using your card and PIN at an ATM or when making a purchase in a shop. Remember, always shield your PIN and take your card promptly.
• Do not share your password details with any third parties. Passwords should be known only to you. It's also good practice to change your passwords regularly.
• When considering a suitable password for an account or online application, avoid using family or pet names, birthdays or ages, which criminals could match from stolen data.
• Never use the same password for different accounts.

If you use an online banking service...
Remember that your bank or building society will never ask you to supply your complete password to enable you to access internet banking. They will only ever ask for parts of your password.
